Have FUN with learning to READ!
Congratulations! You have taken the important first step
to helping your children develop excellent reading skills
- skills that will last a lifetime! There are several games
that you can play to start your children on the road to
reading, but the most important thing to remember is to
follow a balanced approach in your journey to reading success.
The games and activities in this section come from the book
"This is Not a Complete Reading
Program", and are organized according
to Sound Readers "Three Steps to Reading Success" (see below).
As long as you are providing a good mixture of activities
from STEP 1, STEP 2, and STEP 3, you can be
sure that your children will not get "too much of a good
thing".

Teach children all of the SOUNDS we make when
we speak. Play with the sounds by breaking words up
into sounds, and by blending them together again to
make words. To play a Phonemic Awareness game,

 |
Show children the LETTERS and groups of letters
(vowel patterns) that match those sounds. To play
an alphabet or word study game, click here

Help them CONNECT this information to meaningful
and creative reading and writing activities by showing
them how to read words with these patterns where they
occur in interesting, quality books for children,
and in writing on their own. To learn how to help
your children when they are reading aloud, or writing,
